Joy worked as a Registered Nurse for 40 years, obtaining her Graduate of Nursing on June 10th, 1947 in Sudbury. She began her career in Kirkland Lake where she met her husband. They moved to Sudbury in 1951 where she continued her nursing career at St. Joseph’s Hospital until its closing. She then became a Nursing Unit Administrator at Extendicare York until her retirement. On April 24th, 2008 Joy was featured alongside two of her colleagues in an article published in the Sudbury Star entitled Sudbury’s Nightingales. Joy had a very compassionate nature, devoting her life to family, patients and anyone in need. She was often the person that neighbours turned to for first aid and medical advice. Immensely proud of her Irish heritage, Joy often wore green and made St. Patrick’s Day a special occasion. Her children fondly remember the day she painted a giant shamrock on the kitchen ceiling. Joy and Lloyd spent their senior years at the family cottage on the Ottawa River where she was raised. Many annual family reunions were held there with plenty of Irish jigs, music, singing and laughter. Joy’s Catholic faith was essential to her life. She began every morning with prayers which she often shared with family. Appropriately named, she leaves behind a legacy of “Joy”. The family will receive relatives and friends at the Cooperative Funeral Home, 222 Lasalle Blvd, Sudbury, on Friday, October 14th, 2016 from 7-9 p.m. A Memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, October 15th, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations by cheque or online to a charity of your choice are appreciated.
